ABOUT GRENADA:-

Grenada is a beautiful, quiet, oval shaped island, just 21 miles/34 km long and 12 miles/18 km wide.

It is known as the ‘Isle of spice’ because it has long been a major source of nutmeg, mace, cloves, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon. With its enviable climate, fantastic scenery, coral reefs, stunning blue sea, entrancing black and brilliant sugar-fine white sandy beaches, it draws visitors from all over the world.

Confirmed beach addicts and water sports fanatics are equally at home in Grenada. You will be spoilt for choice with a variety of great beaches to choose from and plenty of operators offering wind-surfing, diving, snorkelling, water-skiing, jet-skiing and para-sailing.

Away from the beaches there are a number of distractions, including a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and several rum distilleries.

Grenada is one of the yachting centres of the Caribbean. Regattas are held each year and there are several large marinas. A number of companies run boat and catamaran cruises along the coast, to the beautiful nearby islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique and the other Grenadines. Visitors can also charter boats for deep-sea fishing trips and yachts, with or without a crew, can be arranged.

Grenada’s topography provides the island with one of the loveliest and most varied environments in the Caribbean, with Mount St. Catherine being the highest point. There are forest reserves, a nature centre, nature trails, botanical gardens, volcanic crater lakes, hills and valleys, waterfalls, boiling springs as well as a startling variety of plant and animal life.

Grenada is also a bird watchers paradise and a variety of bird species can be found at some of the island’s most beautiful locations.

The island’s attractive, colonial capital, St. George’s, has a reputation for being the prettiest town in the Caribbean. It is nestled in the hillsides that surround a horseshoe-shaped natural harbour.

With its wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and friendly. You will often see the visiting Tall Ships and cruise liners providing a wonderful backdrop to this most picturesque town.

The market in St. George’s is a noisy, colourful, fragrant experience and is not to be missed. It has been the centre of civic life for the last 200 years. The best time to visit is on a Saturday morning as this is when you will find it at its busiest. The market features much local produce, including many fruits and an array of spices.

Other places of interest include the Carenage, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the House of Parliament, The Esplanade, the National Museum and the 2 forts – Fort George and Fort Frederick - which are situated in elevated positions overlooking the town.

Seasonal attractions include the Carnival, which is held each August. The celebrations are full of colour, music and merry-making. There are street parties, steel bands and calypso competitions.

Grenada boasts 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and average temperatures range from 24C/75F to 30C/87F. The heat is tempered by the steady and cooling trade winds. The lowest temperatures occur between November and February – this is the island’s ‘high season’.

Because of Grenada’s remarkable topography, the island also experiences climate changes according to altitude. The driest season is between January and May. Even during the rainy season, from June to December, it rarely rains for more than an hour at a time and generally not every day.

Hire cars, taxis and the inexpensive buses (with a flat rate fare) make travelling around the island very easy.

The official language is English but French patois is also spoken.

The island’s unit of currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar* but major credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted as payment for goods and services.

* EC$ 2.70 is approximately equivalent to 1 US dollar.
